Our client is looking for a Senior Benefits Calculations Consultant to join its Pensions Technology team.

This is a senior, non-developer role within a team responsible for developing and maintaining systems that support a wide range of Defined Benefit Pension work, including Actuarial modelling, pension administration, benefit calculations, GMP Equalisation and member options.

You’ll sit at the intersection of Pensions and Technology, using your technical Pensions knowledge to help shape how benefits are modelled and calculated within the organisation’s systems.

Working closely with software developers and Pensions specialists, you’ll be the subject matter expert when it comes to questions such as what a model should do in a particular scenario, whether the results are correct, and how systems can be configured or adapted to deal with non-standard situations.

The role would suit someone from a Pensions Actuarial, Pensions Administration or Pensions technology background who enjoys problem solving and wants to apply their Pensions expertise in a technology-focused environment.

Why Join?

  • A senior role where you’ll become a subject matter expert across Pensions calculations and modelling, working closely with both technology and Pensions teams.
  • The opportunity to work on systems supporting a broad range of DB Pension calculations and projects.
  • A role that combines technical Pensions expertise, modelling, testing and problem solving, without requiring you to be a software developer.
  • Exposure to emerging areas including AI, automation and Collective Defined Contribution (CDC) schemes.
  • The opportunity to influence how new functionality is designed, tested and introduced across the business.
  • A collaborative environment with Pensions, administration and software development expertise within the same team.
  • Scope to develop your technical and software skills further, including programming where relevant to the team’s objectives.
  • The opportunity to mentor colleagues, share Pensions knowledge and help users get the most from the technology.

Key Responsibilities

  • Use your detailed Pensions benefits knowledge to help define technical specifications for benefits calculation and modelling systems.
  • Design, build and maintain appropriate benchmark test results, ensuring new functionality is tested thoroughly and from a risk-based perspective.
  • Work closely with software developers throughout the development and testing process, acting as the Pensions subject matter expert.
  • Review new functionality and changes to ensure calculations are technically correct and meet the relevant professional requirements.
  • Consider how changes should be communicated to users and contribute to appropriate documentation and guidance.
  • Support ongoing improvements to established systems while balancing existing business requirements with opportunities to develop and enhance functionality.
  • Provide technical support to Pensions Actuarial and administration teams, including helping users configure, troubleshoot and adapt models for non-standard situations.
  • Contribute to emerging initiatives involving AI, process automation and new approaches to Pension calculations.
  • Share Pensions knowledge across the development team through training, mentoring and ongoing collaboration.
  • Contribute to complex projects involving multiple stakeholders and manage several workstreams or issues concurrently.

About You

We’re looking for someone with strong technical knowledge of UK Defined Benefit Pension calculations and modelling. You may come from a Pensions Actuarial, Pensions Administration or Pensions technology background.

Ideally, you’ll have:

  • Strong knowledge of DB Pension calculations and benefit structures, including GMP Equalisation, retirement options and pensions tax limits.
  • Experience using, testing or configuring Actuarial modelling or benefits calculation software.
  • A good understanding of Actuarial liability modelling and relevant professional requirements.
  • Excellent technical skills, particularly in Excel. C# or VBA experience would be advantageous.
  • A logical, methodical approach and an eye for identifying gaps or inconsistencies.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • A consulting mindset, with the ability to manage multiple projects, respond to changing priorities and find practical solutions.
  • A proactive and collaborative approach, with a genuine interest in improving how pensions technology is used across the business.

A professional Actuarial qualification would be advantageous, but our client are open to candidates from a range of relevant Pensions backgrounds who have the technical expertise and enthusiasm to develop in the role.

Benefits

  • 26 days holiday, with option to buy or sell days
  • Private Medical Insurance
  • Competitive Pension Plan
  • Annual performance-based bonus
  • Range of additional benefits
  • Hybrid working, typically 2-3 days a week in the office
